Stay Classy San Diego

So for all you Saint Louisans, I’m glad the heat has broken, and I hope you have power. With that out of the way, the weather in San Diego is just about perfect. The high today was seventy-five degree. The high yesterday was seventy-five degrees. The high tomorrow? You guessed it. Seventy-five degrees. Tuesday it may get up to seventy-six. Don’t hate me. Tonight, watching the sun set over the Pacific Ocean, I had to put on a warm jacket. Please don’t hate me.

We started the day in Old Town San Diego. There are lots of shops and places to eat but it’s pretty touristy. Since we’re tourists, I guess that’s okay. There was an old one-room school house that was cute. We ate lunch at The Old Mexican Café, where they were making flour and corn tortillas in the front window. Tim got carnitas, and I got chicken. I never thought I’d say this, but I was pork- and beefed-out. The skin of the chicken had a great spice on it, but the meat was a little dry. Tim’s carnitas had been deep fried—not bad but I’d never eaten them that way. I have to say the tortillas were a little disappointing compared to what we ate in San Antonio.

From there we took a two hour tour of San Diego Harbor. San Diego’s harbor does not have anything extraordinary like San Francisco or New York, but it was a beautiful day to be out on a boat. We ate dinner at The Fish Market. One of the few things I don’t like about living in the Midwest is lacking access to really fresh seafood. The Fish Market was a combination market and restaurant. You stand at the cases of fresh fish and order either the fresh fish to go or for them to cook right there. There were fish I had never heard of before. Tim and I both went with what we knew and ordered a soft-shell crab sandwich and some fried halibut. Both were quite tasty.

After dinner we headed to Sunset Cliffs to watch a gorgeous sunset over the Pacific Ocean—a great way to end the day.
