The Isle of Capri and Positano (Creative, huh?)

June 14--day 6

These towns--Sorrento (and all the little ones just blend in on either side), the town of Capri, Positano...although on first glance my look the same, each have their own vibe. It's hard to qualify exactly what makes each town different without knowing more specifics. Dina, our tour guide, again, has been great about giving a little history of how each town became what it is. Tim and I were always listening intently...maybe because we're educators, but more likely because we're dorks. :) I don't always remember each detail, but it seems to be just the right amount to understand why a town is how it is. Sorrento buzzes with activity. When we got there, I would have told you that the streets where super narrow...that is, until we went to Positano.

This is a place that Tim said, "No, I wouldn't want to drive there." The highway (one of the reasons it had a second awakening) sits on the edge of a cliff. Again, I don't remember the exact history, but I know that it used to be accessible only by little walking trails and by the sea. Something political happened (I know, I'm terrible) and the taxes became so harsh that people were practically slaves (fuedal system), making it an undesirable place to live. Something else happened and it attracted artists and free spirits...anyway, all that to say, it's an artsy little town with ceramics (and more lemons).

Capri is the place of the movie stars and other rich people. Sophia Loren has a house there. The water is so blue it's ridiculous. And there are more expensive shops than you can shake a stick at.

Okay, I just can't keep up with good writing and downloading (soooooo slow). It keeps me up too late and I'm almost officially to old to stay up until 2:00 a.m., get up at 6:00 a.m., and bounce back nicely. Enjoy the pictures.

Pulling out of Sorrento on the way to the Isle of Capri

got out of the big boat, into a little boat at the Isle of Capri to see the grotto

Look at that water--it's the limestone and lighting that makes it so blue.

Just hangin' out at in Positano
