From the Mountains...to the Lakes (and Mountains)

June 19--day 11

Today we left the Dolomites, still under cloudy skies. It really is amazing how different the landscape and culture is in each town.

Bye Bye alpine town

We drove to Milan and visited it in the rain. Even with the rain, the beauty of the gothic style Duomo was unreal. The cloudy skies, scaffolding, and stage in front of it made for some average photos, but it's just unbelievable--fourth  largest church in the world!

We also walked down to Castello Sforzesco (Sforza Castle) to view Michelangelo's last work, unfinished--Rondanini Pietà. He started on it when he was eighty years old and meant for it to be on his tomb:

The contrast of this work compared to the Pieta at the Vatican City musuem, which is filled with agonizing detail, speaks to the aging of our mortal bodies. I look forward to seeing the David.

We ended our day Driving to Lake Maggiore--one of the many beautiful lakes of the northwestern region of Italy. Tomorrow we will explore this the lake and one of its islands.

Lake Maggiore
Oh, dinner:

veal with potatoes and carrots
