Few Words

June 12, 2016--day 4

I cannot go to bed at 2:00 a.m. again. Today in several pictures and few words...

Alborobello...UNESCO site. Trulli. Built by peasants to avoid taxes. Taxed on housing. Conical roofs made of stacked limestone without mortar. When word got out that the tax collectors were coming to assess housing, roofs could easily be collapsed by removing just a few stones. No longer a building, therefore not taxed.

Unbelievably delicious misto (mixed) bruchetta. Clockwise from top left...walnut, cheese, saffron; artichoke (I think), mushroom; mozzarella, ground olives (and oil), basil; red pepper, unidentified thing on top--possibly a caper berry but with a little spice...freakin' awesome, all of them.

Millenary olive tree, meaning at least 1,000 years old. Drove through huge groves of them on the way to Ostuni--twisted and gnarled trunk, silvery leaves waving in the breeze.

Ostuni--literally translated--new town. Nickname--Pulia's (the region of Italy) White City. All the buildings are whitewashed. Sits up on a hill overlooking the olive groves. Fortressed walls because they were attached by just about everybody. Greeks built it. Romans occupied it, then lots of others, then the Turks.

Handmade orcchietta typical of the Pulia region where we are. We just just happened to eat it at this agritourissmo farmhouse. We are enjoying the company of many of the people we have met on the tour.

Okay...made it by 12:51. Going to bed!
