This is where it all ended at 10:30 p.m. In the Crescent City, where people party into the wee (and not so wee) hours of the morning, this is my idea of a late-night binge--beignets and a cafe au lait at Cafe Du Monde. If you've ever been, you know there is no pretty way to eat these suckers. The key is to take a bite without 1) blowing the powdered sugar everywhere, or 2) inhaling it and making a scene. The outside of these fried pillows of goodness is crispy and sweet, while the inside is light and steamy.
As I was opening my mouth wide to finish off the last bite, Tim whispered, almost under his breath, "Picture." I knew exactly what he meant. But before I had finished chewing the last bite, he followed up with, "I think I'm going to start my own blog." I waited, not really sure where this was going. He smiled and said, "It's going to be titled, "Where in the world is Amy eating?" He didn't miss a beat and added, "I'll add a trivia section of close-up pictures of the food you spill on your clothes. Person wins by guessing where you dropped it. Bonus if you can tell what the food was." It's a good thing I had swallowed that last bite. It could have gotten ugly--beignets spewed everywhere.
We slept in a little this morning, getting into New Orleans around 2:30 p.m. We ate granola bars for breakfast knowing the feeding would begin once we got here. Lunch was at Acme Oyster Bar. It looked like this:
Seafood Etouffee (lighting was horrible--it wasn't this orange)
1/2 and 1/2 platter (1/2/ shrimp, 1/2 oysters)
The Peacemaker Po' Boy--1/2 shrimp, 1/2 oysters
char-grilled oysters
Needless to say, we made up for not eating much breakfast and eating a late lunch. The etouffee was the best I've ever eaten. It was topped with fried crawfish...mmm, good. After the late lunch, we strolled around the French Quarter, peaking in shops and taking in the people. We stopped at Southern Candy Makers and picked up these:
tortues (French for turtles), and a praline
Once we got back to the hotel...
...we nibbled at the candy and rested. About 10 o'clock, we decided to head to Cafe Du Monde...and you know how that ended.

Food looks and sounds oh-so-delicious! I remember those messy, white pillows of heaven! If you get a chance, check out Deanie's, located in the French Quarter on Iberville. I had the Crabmeat au gratin twice in three days. It's so rich and creamy and loaded with chunks of crab. Mmmm. How's your near perfect vision? Glad to hear Tim is feeling better--I cannot wait to read his blog!! Hope the weather stays on your side. Happy Memorial Day!
Oh my goodness, Amy! Such mouth-watering temptations. Vicarious living is not too bad when it's done through you. I think you need your own television show. You are much more entertaining than most of those folks on the food networks. Waiting for the next meal or snack and for Tim's guessing game too.
Mmmm...I remember those little pillows of deliciousness from October when we were there! Same place and my picture looks just like that! We had a Po Boy also. Good food. Have fun.
I'm hungry!
Craig
All of this reminds me of the week I was in New Orleans. The pictures of the food are calling me........
