Last summer, we abruptly ended our road-tripping blog
entries when we left New Orleans and headed to the beach. Some of you wondered
if we had fallen off the face of the earth. But come on—what did you want me to
write about?
…Today, we sat at the beach and ate seafood…the end.
Normally, it would be a whole year before the return of the
blog, but this fall, Tim got a wild hair. On September 28, he and his buddy
Andy went to Mizzou for Tim’s first big-time college football game. I think he
caught the bug. He loved the atmosphere, the vibe, the energy.
I have been talking for years, about going to Tuscaloosa for
a game, but it was always just a thought. My dad attended the University of
Alabama, and for as long as I can remember, we have rooted for The Crimson Tide.
But Tuscaloosa is eight hours away, and Tim and I both work in the school
system. It’s difficult for me to get away during a school year, especially in
the fall. It’s even more difficult for Tim.
This year, the stars have aligned. Tim loved the Mizzou experience;
he was off this Friday because of parent/teacher conferences, and he wanted to
share the fun with me. Sooooo…I got a hold of my cousin Keith to see if we
could score some tickets, took my first vacation day during a school year in my
entire career, and we were off and running, planning a mini-road trip!
The best part, though, it that I am going to get to visit
with cousins I have not seen in decades! In fact, Tim and I are staying with my
cousin Carolyn. We are so excited! We will spend all day tomorrow driving with
a stop in Memphis—for BBQ, of course. Saturday will be the Alabama football
experience, and then Sunday, we will head back home. It will be a short trip,
but a welcomed respite from the craziness of kids. I think I’m going to try to
blog this little trip because everything we’re doing (except BBQ in Memphis) is
a new experience. Tim has really only met one of my dad’s sisters and her family.
He is in for a treat. :)
I have never been to a big-time, SEC college football game. I think I am in for
a treat, too. :)
Oh, and the up-to-this-point unwritten, underlying current?
Tim has been a Mizzou fan for as long as he can remember. I have been an Alabama fan for as long as I can remember. This should make for
an interesting BCS watch at our house this winter. Stay tuned.
...and...
Roll Tide. Shh...don't tell Tim.
