Boys Just Like to Watch People Run Into Each Other...

Let me start with an incident from Monday night that happened after I posted for the evening:

Many evenings, while Tim and I are sitting in our living room, me on the laptop, Tim watching T.V., I often hear him let out a belly laugh and say, "Wait, wait, wait, you gotta' see this!" He then uses one of the most annoying features of modern technology--the ability of the dvr to replay the last few minutes of the program the viewer is watching. Sometimes it's a great play (whatever season it may be--baseball, football, hockey, basketball), but most often it's pain. Did you hear me? Pain. It may be one of those shows that sends people through an impossible obstacle course, just waiting for them to wipe-out, (In fact, I think one of the shows is called Wipe-Out.) or it may be an accidental collision of any number of people. I guess he thinks that one of these times, I'll think it's funny. But I don't. I don't understand the humor in it. Sometimes I'll even say to him, "You just ain't right." He just keeps laughing. He may even play it a few more times so he can laugh some more.

I've prefaced Monday evening's events with this story because I had an "ah-ha" moment last night. Not a life-changing, "Oprah" moment, but one that helps me understand that my husband is not alone. In fact, I'm thinking it's not just an isolated case of my husband's goofiness. Let me explain. I was messing around on Facebook while Tim was doing some research for today's agenda; Kathey (my brother Craig's wife) was on her computer, and Craig was watching T.V. Then it happened. I hear that eerily familiar laugh and the words, "You gotta' see this!" But it was not my husband's voice I heard. I couldn't believe my ears. Craig grabbed the remote and proceeded to replay 2 kids in the outfield at the Home Run Derby running into each other as they made the play for a fly-ball. I winced. Tim, of course, laughed. It was then I had my revelation. Tim wasn't the only one who laughed at other people's pain. Kathey wasn't laughing. I wasn't laughing. But there were Craig and Tim--laughing out loud and long. And yes, Craig played it again. And they laughed. Again.

While 2 men by no means represent the entire male population, I'm betting that this observation coupled with the fact that almost every guy I know thinks that The-Three-Stooges-slapstick "comedy" is funny means that I'm not the only woman out there whose husband replays collisions on a regular basis...and laughs about it.

Sorry for that little story; I just had to share. Today was another day of lots of time in the car. We drove to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I'm glad there were some things to do other than hang out at the beach because it was overcast all day. We started with The Lost Colony of Roanoke. Since this is a "lost colony," there really wasn't a ton to see. Later in the evening, there was a play, but neither of us wanted to stick around for it. Next we headed to Kill Devil Hills, where the Wright Brothers launched the first flight. We saw the actual site where the flight was accomplished and a museum that chronicled the process. We also hiked up a little hill to the monument to the Wright Brothers. It was an interesting piece of history. We headed on down to Buxton which is the town where the tallest lighthouse in North America is located (Cape Hatteras). We got there too late this evening to go up into the lighthouse.

We ate dinner at the Captain's Table (not as good as Captain Steve's last night nor anywhere near the value). We checked into our hotel on the beach and walked down to the water. It was cold! We walked the beach for a while then saw a storm brewing complete with lightning. We decided to go back to the room and watch the storm from the safety of our deck. Tomorrow we will tour the lighthouse and hope that the weather doesn't restrict us from going up into it. That's all for now.

(Just this picture this evening--the wireless connection stinks! I barely got this posted.)

Are still on the look out for wild horses?

Hey guys! The wild horses are on Corova Beach--northernmost tip of the Outer Banks. It is only accessible with four wheel drive. Why?? There are no roads. We did Wild Horse Adventure Tours. Guide gives you lots of info about the horses, region, etc. AND you don't get lost!! cynde

That's what the boys were experiencing...schadenfreude!

Hope you are getting some good beach time. Be sure to lick some salt air for me.

Just last night Corbin was watching an episode of Wipeout that he had recorded on the DVR. On more than one occasion he took advantage of the rewind feature. I have to admit though, I was laughing right along with him... :-)
