Did I Mention the Smell?

No, not the nasty ones in NYC, the beautiful ones on Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard. Almost every property has a row or two of hedges to give them privacy, but mainly to break the gusts of wind that sweep across the islands. The hedge of choice is something that starts with P. (Karen, can you help? Tim and I can't remember.) It smells like honeysuckle. It's almost intoxicating. It couldn't be any more different from the smells of New York City.

Today, we took a leisurely drive up The Cape to Provincetown. For those in St. Louis, Provincetown is a little like the Loop in U-City but bigger. There were more touristy, cheap shops, but also more artsy-fartsy shops, too. We went up in the monument to the Pilgrims and could see the very tip of The Cape from a good ways up. There is no elevator in this monument, but there was a series of ramps and stairs that made the climb quite doable, even by me. It was a great view. We saw several lighthouses and got to go up in one as well. Today was a little slower, but on The Cape, I think it has to be. We ended up in Plymouth, where tomorrow we will explore the first (okay, really third after Roanoke Colony and Jamestown) European settlement in North America. I took only three pictures today. Tim took most of them. I'll see if I can get him to post his.

We did not walk out to the end of The Cape. From up in the Pilgrim Monument, it looked like a big sand bar. We knew we weren't spending a lot of time in Provincetown.
