Yes, I said ferry, Whidbey, Chuckanut. Today, we took our first ferry to Widbey Island then drove Chuckanut Dr.
The ferry ride was a short 15 minute ride across a narrow part of Puget Sound. It was one of several ferry rides we'll take. The ride took us to a quaint little island whose claim to fame is the longest island (55 miles long) in the northern hemisphere. I don't know if that's true or not, but it's their claim. All the way up the island we were treated to water and mountains--the Olympic Mountains to the west and the Cascade Mountains to the east. It was lovely. We ate on the water in Coupeville on Penn Cove at the Mad Crab. We didn't have crab, but we did have fish and chips (very good) and Penn Cove mussels and linguine (really good). We sat at a little table overlooking Penn Cove. Probably the best part of the drive was Deception Pass, again, water, mountains, and steep cliffs. At the far north end of Whidbey Island is the town of Anacortes. From there you can see Mt. Baker, the tallest in the Cascade range AND, looming in the distance...Mt. Rainier, about 150 miles away--unbelievable.
We ended the day with a drive up Chuckanut Dr.--a shortened and less dramatic version of Highway 1 in California, but pretty none the less. We ended the night early by stopping in Bellingham, WA, just short of the Canadian border. Molly, if you're reading, Tim and I were "gourmet fooded out" and didn't want a big meal...so...we ate at Wendy's (I miss Wendy's in St. Louis). I know I don't have to tell you what I ate, but for those who won't know--french fries and a Frosty--of course I dipped.
By the way, we have once again had freakishly good weather. If someone asked me and Tim what the weather is like in the Pacific Northwest, we would say, "Well, very comfortable temperatures--high in the low seventies and sunny." I know, I know, we're probably jinxing ourselves, and rain is the forecast for the middle of the week, but both this year and last, (4 days so far) we have had no rain. We'll see.
