When we got up and left The Prospect Hotel, we had a 45 minute drive to Crater Lake. We encountered several more falls and gorges on the way up—once again, beautiful. We entered Crater Lake from the southwestern entrance. Parts of the rim road were still closed due to SNOW! The park rangers were clearing the snow from some of the hiking paths while we were there. It was obvious that many of the roads had had to be cleared of snow. While it was cold, I don’t think it was 32˚F, and I don’t understand how the snow stays. We did get to see the Crater Lake Lodge—pretty cool. Anyway, back to Crater Lake—unbelievable. I have never seen water so blue. Once again, neither words nor pictures can really describe it.
When we left Crater Lake, we headed to the northern California coast—Crescent City to be exact. Right before we pulled into the city, we got a preview of the redwoods. We dipped into Redwood National Forest and drove through groves of the biggest trees in the world! Fantastic. I had to use the wide angle lens if I wanted to get an entire tree in a frame…and, once again, pictures don’t do the majestic giants justice. We pulled into Crescent City just in time to witness a Pacific Coast sunset complete with a lighthouse.
