Editing/Proofreading 101

The Internet has become a place for people to express themselves with an immediacy like never before. I've always written in a journal, and I've also written for an audience--be it professor, friend, or masses of people, but this type of writing is completely different. First of all, it's so informal. I've noticed myself writing in a very conversational voice, which isn't bad for this platform, but is difficult to punctuate. I write with a lot of parenthesis and incomplete thoughts, hence, lots of sentence fragments. I take full creative license when writing in a forum such as this, but I try to be as grammatically correct as possible. I don't, however, stop to look up a rule that I can't remember...

...so...

there are going to be mistakes. This little aside from the travel information has not been precipitated by anyone. In fact, my mother-in-law, Helen, an English teacher for 38 (is that right?) years, made sure I knew she had not corrected me when she noticed that someone had corrected a comment. (The comment was self-corrected by the same person who wrote it--not me.) My sister is also a typist and grammarian extraordinaire. I know I have some pretty sharp eyes out there viewing this blog, so I really try (figuratively, of course) to cross my t's and dot my i's. (By the way, should I have apostrophes after the t and i?) What I found though, is that when I am posting almost everyday, and I am usually in a hurry--I miss things. There is a spell checker on my posting tool bar, but as you all know, that doesn't catch everything, (and I must admit; I don't always use it).

Why did I write this blathering apology? Umm...probably because I am feeling self-conscious about all these words, words, words. There is just so much here, and as I have looked back to answer some of the comments, I have noticed my own mistakes...eewww. I am my own proofreader and editor; therefore, I know I'll miss some things.

Be kind. Be gentle. But keep reading!

I'm retired! I'm much more interested with your news than with your punctuation! Besides--I was paid to edit before! See, I've used exclamation marks for the first 3 sentences. Oh, wait, I should use a fragment or two to prove my point. The spelling? No, I'll try to pass on that. Try, at least!!!!

Seriously, I love your travel plans and the little map. For those of us who are visual learners, it'll be very reassuring and informative.

Love to you both. Take care.

Amy and Tim,

Just a few places to think about on your trip.

Crater Lake at sunrise is breathtaking if you get the chance.
OR
How about the 17 mile drive in Carmel?
OR
Castroville, CA (the artichoke capital of the world)
OR
Scoma’s restaurant close to fisherman’s wharf in San Francisco (get the abalone it’s worth the price)
OR
Bodega Bay, CA (where the move “The Bird’s” was filmed.)
OR
Multnomah Falls in Oregon (you can hike to the top and a great place to take pictures.)
OR
Timberline Lodge at the top of Mt. Hood.
OR
If you go the Lake Tahoe take highway 50 from San Francisco as you drive over the mountains you will slowly start to see the lake with all the different shades of blue. Very beautiful.
OR
The Royal Gorge in Canon City, CO.

Have a safe and fun one.

P.S. Amy, I clicked on the "other" to respond and it looks like it will work.

@ Craig
Excellent suggestions! I remember the drive in to Lake Tahoe from our visit to see you MANY years ago! We will be sure to take that route. We will also check out as many of the others as we can.
