Cinque Terre

June 21--day 14

Today we saw the cinque terra--literally translated, five lands, with a little liberty, five villages. The best way to experience these five villages is by boat; however, you can walk from the town of Porto Venere and walk a trail down the Ligurian coast to all five villages--the walk is approximately twelve hours.

We traveled by three means of tranportation today--coach, boat, and train. We left Santa Margherita by bus and drove about thirty minutes to La Spezia, where we took our first ferry to Porto Venere. From there, we got another boat to view the five villages. We pulled in to the ports at Riomaggiore and Manarola to let people on and off the boats. There is no harbor at Corniglia so we did not stop there. We spent time at both Vernazza and Monterossa.

From our last stop at Monterosso, we took a quick train to a place where our coach could pick us up. We had the late afternoon and dinner on our own.
